Guidance on Memorial Removal
for Existing Graves

Memorial Removal before Interment

When a burial is due to take place in an existing grave, any existing memorialisation—such as headstones or kerb sets—must be removed before the grave can be opened.

Contacting a Stonemason

It is essential that you contact a stonemason as soon as possible. The stonemason will take direct instructions from you regarding both the removal and reinstatement of the memorial. They will also provide information on their associated costs, which can vary.

Important Timeframes & Funeral Planning

We kindly request that any memorials are removed at least one week prior to the funeral. In some recent cases, the removal of kerb sets has proved difficult. Failure to remove these memorials in time may unfortunately result in the postponement or cancellation of the funeral service.

Sharing Stonemason Details

Once you have instructed your chosen stonemason, please share their contact details with us. This ensures we can liaise directly with them if needed to avoid any delays.

Thank you all for looking after our beloved Daughter / Sister, also for all the help and advice. Thank you so much (April, 2025)
